Window Repair vs. Replacement: How to Decide

Compare repairable hardware and glass concerns with frame damage, recurring leaks and broader performance goals.

A simple repair-or-replace decision path

Start with the symptom, identify whether the hardware, glass, frame or surrounding wall is responsible, then compare part availability and the expected service life. A repair is more attractive when the frame is sound and the issue is isolated.

Symptoms and likely scope

Loose cranks, locks, screens and weatherstripping often point to hardware or perimeter work. Fogging between panes indicates a failed sealed unit. Rot, movement, recurring water entry or a distorted frame may require replacement or opening repairs.

When to request both options

If a repair would solve today’s symptom but leave poor operation, failed seals or a deteriorating frame, ask for a repair scope and a replacement scope. Compare disruption, finishing, performance and cost.
